Pepperl+Fuchs Podcasts

Pepperl+Fuchs’ TechTalk helps listeners gain an insight into modern automation technologies by focusing on AS-Interface (Actuator Sensor Interface) and its associated safety technology, Safety at Work. TechTalk covers topics that range from hardware selection to installation and maintenance. Control engineers familiar with AS-Interface will get the latest news on specification enhancements, hear about new products, and familiarize themselves with established and cutting-edge troubleshooting methods, tips, and tricks.  Users who are interested in applying these technologies will learn what it takes to set up an AS-Interface system, how Safety at Work improves safety systems, and why those technologies have the potential to save time and money during all phases of a project.

AS-Interface safe outputs have several use cases.  Last week, the theory of operation of AS-Interface safe output modules was discussed. This week, Tim and Helge talk about the effects the safe addresses have on the applications.

  • - Several safe outputs utilize the same safe address -- in this case, all safe outputs switch simultaneously.
  • - Safe outputs having unique safe addresses --   in this case, each safe-output module is controlled independently.  Depending on the Safety Monitor, up to 16 independent sets of safe rules can be configured.
  • - Learning the safety sequence -- Since the safety sequence for outputs is defined by the selected address, any safe-output module knows what to expect at its assigned safe address.  The safety sequence does not have to be taught.
  • - Replacing a safe-output module - Only the desired safe address must be assigned using the AS-Interface handheld.  After that, automatic node replacement takes over and assigns the diagnostic address.
